Oct 26, 2025byEmily Dawson

Barivel isn’t just any cat, he’s a record-breaking Maine Coon from Italy who officially holds the title of the world’s longest domestic cat. Measuring over 120 centimetres (almost four feet) from nose to tail, Barivel’s size has made him a global sensation.

Despite his enormous frame, this gentle giant lives a quiet life with his devoted owners, who say he’s surprisingly shy and loves attention only on his terms. His name, which means “clown” in Italian dialect, perfectly captures his playful yet regal personality.

On 22 May 2018, Barivel was officially measured at 120 centimetres, securing his place as the longest living domestic cat in Guinness World Records history. That’s nearly four feet from his nose to the tip of his tail.

Barivel earned his world record at just two years of age, which is earlier than many Maine Coons reach their full adult size. Most cats of his breed continue growing until they’re three to five years old.

The measurement process followed strict guidelines to ensure accuracy and fairness. Barivel had to be stretched out fully in a relaxed state while a veterinarian and official adjudicator recorded every detail.

Born In Vigevano, Italy

Barivel was born in September 2016 in Vigevano, a town in the Pavia province of northern Italy. He still lives there today with his devoted owners, Cinzia Tinnirello and Edgar Scandurra. Despite worldwide attention, Barivel remains a homebody who enjoys the familiar comforts of his Italian household.

The name Barivel comes from a local Italian dialect and translates roughly to clown or joker. His owners chose this playful name with a sense of humour, though it turned out to be somewhat ironic.

Rather than acting like a mischievous jester, Barivel is known for his calm and reserved personality. He prefers quiet cuddles and peaceful naps over wild antics or attention-seeking behaviour.
