They recorded Caterpillar’s cries, thinking his voice might be the key to drawing his mother back.
Armed with a speaker, the team boarded a small boat and began cruising across Morro Bay, playing the recording on repeat.

For nearly two hours, they drifted across the calm waters, calling out into the distance through the little speaker.
Then, as if by magic, a female sea otter appeared on the surface.
She stopped, listened, and began following the sound each time the cries played.
