Every day for nearly a decade, a golden brown Akita named Hachiko walked to Shibuya Station in Tokyo, hoping to see his owner return. Professor Hidesaburo Ueno had passed away suddenly in 1925, but Hachiko never stopped believing he would come back.

Commuters and station staff watched this faithful dog arrive each afternoon at the exact time his owner used to return from work. Rain or shine, Hachiko kept his vigil until his own death in 1935.

Today, a bronze statue stands at the station, honouring this remarkable display of devotion that moved an entire nation.

Carbon monoxide is called the silent killer because people cannot smell or see this deadly gas. When a faulty pump began leaking the poison into a Colorado home, the family slept on, completely unaware.

Winnie, their longhaired cat, sensed something terribly wrong. She jumped on her owners and meowed frantically, pawing at their faces until they woke up feeling dizzy and nauseous.

They called for help immediately, and paramedics confirmed dangerous carbon monoxide levels in their home. Winnie received an award for her life-saving actions that night.

Just four days after being adopted from a shelter, Khan the Doberman spotted a deadly king brown snake slithering toward Charlotte, a toddler playing in her Australian backyard. He acted instantly, nudging the child away from danger.

When Charlotte did not move fast enough, Khan grabbed her diaper and tossed her several feet to safety. The snake struck Khan instead, injecting venom into his paw.

Rushed to a veterinarian, Khan received anti-venom treatment and survived. His quick instincts and willingness to sacrifice himself saved the little girl from a potentially fatal bite.
